The Story of a Mother - Part 8

Bama despite her miseries kept in touch with her sister Sita's family and played the role of a mother towards her sisters's sons Ramu and Vasu. Sita died in 1952 when she delivered Vasu. Bama had taken up a job then. She afforded the best care to Vasu for the next two years till she got married in 1954. The picture shows Bama with her parents, Vasu and her daughter. The relatioship continues to this date and Bama played an active role in getting both the boys married as Sita would have done if she is alive.

Her efforts to shift to Erakudi to be close to Parthasarathy did not benefit the family in anyway. As usual he never bothered about how the lady was running the family and made frequent vists in Cycle as the place was only 10 Km away. One night at 12 hours somebody banged the door. Both Bama and kamala were frightened. They thought it would be robber. Only when Pathasarthy calledout her name, she recognized the voice and opened the door. Without even getting down from his cycle he said," I am in a hurry. You would have got your salary today. Give it . I'll give it by tomorrow evening."

Bama got furious , but contained herself, she hesitantly said,"Milkman....., Grocery.....,Vegetable Vendor........all of them will come to collect their dues in the morning, what would I say?".

"Tell them, it was an emergency and they'll get their money day after tomorrow."

"Sorry, there is no emergency for me than feeding my children. You, please, make some other arrangement."

Parthasarathy did'nt expect this. This is the first open revolt by Bama. His anger knew no limits and showered abuses standing in the street. Bama was almost dead with shame. Parthasarathy went away  furiously.

Bama knew he would not allow her to live in peace. In few months he came with a proposal of a job for her in his school. Bama accepted it and the family left Erakudi in 1964. The next 4 years were the most harrowing years in Bama's life. Even now the memory of those years bring shudders to Bama.
